I see a lot of difference in pricing for stereolithography parts from service bureaus. In some cases the quoted cost is equal to only the material cost. How can this be?

I have heard that rapid prototyping machines are getting cheaper..therefore, the 'big fish' that used to use service bureaus typically have there own Stereolithography machines in-house or smaller start-up companies can afford them now and under bid older, established companies just to get the work.

All-in-all, pricing varies drastically from company to company...

When you receive a quote from a service bureau what assurance do you have that the part you receive will be any good.  I understand that there are different quality parameters used to build parts as well as different skills of producing the parts.
Each quote requires prepayment. I am afraid to use the low quote and get a junk sterolothigrophy model.

Any suggestions?

I believe you're right about quality. I personally don't think it's worth saving a few bucks if you're nervous about quality. You typically get what you pay for when it comes to prototyping or anything else for that matter. I guess it depends what you're using the prototype for, or how important fit and finish is.
